I must admit that Word of Honor was not on my list of "must-see" but for some reason I found myself watching it and got hooked from the very first episode. Believe it or not, I was pacing my viewing time as to extend the days I could enjoy this story. Undoubtedly, it is one of the best series I have seen in whatever genre there is.
The plot is nothing new in historical fantasy drama. Sects getting obsessed with some kind of treasure, people being greedy and too ambitious and betrayal of brotherhood are things that are too apparent even in this day and age. So, it must be the x-factor, the undeniable charisma of the two male leads and the sterling performances of the supporting cast.
Zhang Zhe Han (Zhou Zi Shu) and Simon Gong (Wen Kexing) are both brilliant actors in this series which made me curious about their other works. I thought it would be awkward to watch soulmates of the same gender but not these two. They make things fun and serious at the same time and the chemistry is so palpable, it makes my heart sing with glee. I have long given up on the idea of finding one myself but these two have made me pen these lines.
"I Know you exist for me... My other half, my soulmate, my plea... Find me now in this lifetime and see... We shall sing in perfect harmony..."
To mention a few supporting roles, the Sword Immortal's character has proven that being advanced in years do not exempt one from taking things wrong. Older people still get duped and gets confused on what's right and wrong. However, in the end he was instrumental in paving the way for our lead characters to become each other's salvation. Even the Scorpion King was truly phenomenal in his acting. I can totally feel the struggle within him to find balance between his ambitions and pleasing his adopted father.
However, the most important thing to get from this story is the reminder that there is no absolute truth in this world. There is no absolute good or evil. People are molded by circumstances and judged by the choices we make. That's why we need to be compassionate and be willing to listen first before we act.
Intentions can also be thwarted. A good one can turn into a disaster with a single wrong decision or under an influence of a single person. It can be the other way around though, and I believe that's what makes this series so interesting. Perhaps, what tugs the heart of viewers is the fact that the portrayal speaks of what our own hearts yearn the most. The undeniable bond, the knowing you've found the one. The spark of light you can finally see at the end of the tunnel and the hope of a new dawn of meaningful existence.
And least I forget, the interplay of relationships in this series will remind you of what's important in this world- compassion, loyalty, forgiveness and love.
The series ended on a sad not, sorry for this spoiler. Being a sucker for happy endings, I could not simply accept it so I had to search for the real ending (as they say, if it's not happy then it's not the ending yet). Lo and behold, I found a very short episode 37. Find this final episode and you won't regret it, promise!
