There is really something with Ren Jia Lun/ Allen Ren that catches my eye and no matter what character he portrays, the longer you watch- the more it becomes him. Such talent in acting is rare and valuable. No wonder he always takes the lead in so many dramas, historical or otherwise. In Under the Power, you will never get tired of looking at him.

As to the female lead, my apologies but she failed big time to impress me. Maybe because I have my own Chinese FL favorites but I just could not feel any chemistry between her and the ML. There never was an instance when I felt the desire to root for them to end up with each other. I felt as if the ML alone carried the entire weight of the series even if in actuality, the female lead's character is essential to the story overall.

Surprisingly, among other members of the cast, it's Dr. Lin Ling and their nemesis Yan Shi Fan who managed to make an impression on me. Theirs is a tragic love story and once again, love is proven to actually keep one safe when all other factors could not. Other supporting characters are forgettable to say the least.

To be honest, the story itself is quite common and the 55 episodes are too long for it. And while it was stretched too much, the finale episode seemed hurried and anti-climactic. Only the prestige of the Embroidered Uniform Guards and Allen Ren's angelic countenance kept me watching till the end. So shallow I know but it is my truth at this moment.

To credit this story though, family values and filial piety have always been present. Great friendships abound and discipline for martial artists cannot be discounted. It is also worth mentioning, that most everyone has practiced love for king and country and have been willing to give their lives to safeguard their citizens. Their sense of obligation and responsibility are a blessing to the kingdom and its people.

I have been thinking why this series was too long but maybe there really is a saving grace on it that I may not be conscious of. Some of you, given enough patience, might be the ones to discover it and so I will not discourage you further in watching. Just take time and share your thoughts when you're inclined to. Would certainly appreciate it.
