Dylan Wang, you are the only reason I continued watching Unchained Love to the very end. It took me a while though and a lot of detours but I finally made it after a few weeks.
So my verdict is that Dylan's acting keeps on improving but he really shines more in badass, powerful characters. He is the epitome of one being "maginoo pero media Bastos". I can't really think of the exact words in the English language that will express the nuances of that phrase so let me just leave it at that.
Anyway, the story started well. I was entertained by most of the characters and the storyline although common is presented with a twist as the main character is the powerful head of the eunuch department in the dynasty. It also touches on the unfair practices of the past wherein if you are part of the emperor's harem, you will have to die and accompany the emperor when he passes on. The dynamics of most noble families in the past is for me also a sore point when you come from the second or third wife of a noble instead of from the original wife. So many touching points and they were all portrayed realistically in this series.
Towards the end though, things became dragging and predictable. The emperor became crazy and all things scary when an obsession is coated as love comes into play. Lives are sacrificed unnecessarily and power struggles ensued. Laws are bent forward and back just to give way to the emperor's desires. It is worth noting though that in this story, the emperor is steadfast in his claims of loving our lead female to the detriment of the rest of the world. Such isn't true love though. For love should not bring harm to the world but goodness. It should be given freely, with no demands for reciprocity.
The most disappointing part though is the ending. I expected more as Chinese historical series writers are known to be really great at this genre. I believe it could have been written better and less anti-climactic. And there are loose ends like what happened to Princess Wanwan and her prince?
So sorry for this review my Dylan but this story will not be included in the list of tv series I would enjoy watching again. I wish for Dylan though to star in more projects where his talent will be given more justice and challenges to make him sparkle more.
