Love can really catch us off guard especially when we do not really intend or plan to experience it at all.

Such is what happened to our heroine. A no nonsense survivor, she was willing to do everything for her idea of freedom. She is ready to employ any tactic to win even by taming the heart. What she did not expect was her methods backfiring. She fell truly in love and the rest is history.

The same could be said of our hero. He extended help to a fairy in distress at sea only to be captured for her own entertainment. However, the purity of his heart did not mean he was willing to surrender his dignity and freedom. He resisted all efforts to tame him but his will is no match to the power of his heart. He fell in love with the one assigned to tame him and sadly as a result, lost it all- his tail, his home, his heart.

Love became a bittersweet journey for them in the depth's of The Blue Whisper. Despite the deceitful start, they were able to navigate the dangerous path.

Theirs was not the only love story in this series. There were two other couples too, one as heartwarming as the next. You would be reminded of all that is good in this existence while being sad that even among the so called enlightened beings, there is still jealousy, the need for control and power, the despair of loss and the suffering untold. It's like being immortal does not really change the complexity of humanity and we still have to do our share in upholding truth and justice.

Before this observation slips away, let me just mention my admiration for how our hero was played by Ren Jia Lun, also known as Allen Ren. From being a meek merman who wears his heart in his sleeves (or tails in this case), to becoming the master of North Abyss who commands respect and fear just by walking into a room. His transformation and portrayal of these characters are phenomenal. Most importantly, he has a face that grows on you. At first, he looks ordinary to me. So many other actors look better. However, around the end of the series, whenever I think of power and might and love altogether, I automatically remember his face, especially his mouth and eyes. The eyes that pours down pearls instead of tears.

For those of us who enjoy fantasy series and endearing characters, do not miss out on this one. The Blue Whisper is truly worth its two seasons totaling 42 episodes. You won't regret spending time watching each one. That's a merfolk's promise!
