In all honesty, it took me a while to decide if I would watch this series or not. After reading the synopsis, I thought it would be another royalty and palace story that deals with intrigues, ambitions, greed and violence. While there is some truth to it, there is also more to this story than meets the eye. There is more depth, more complications, and more heartbreaks than one regular person should experience in a lifetime.
Watching the trailer actually would give the wrong impressions. The supposed villains are not those you would expect and the intricacies of this story would make you think how boring your own life is.
One point that keeps on bothering me is the fact that even when I'm more than halfway watching the series, the main leads are still not acknowledging each other's feelings. On the contrary, one party is even in love with another. The suspense is making me lose valuable sleep and oh well, maybe that's the hook in this particular story.
Another point that's so unappealing to me is that the guy has to force the girl to face her "assumed" feelings. He has to resort to some kind of violence and sacrifice just so the girl would admit that she also has feelings for him. That kind of gives me the sense that the girl fell in love with him only because of how much he has sacrificed and not because they really connect on a deeper level. I would have wanted to see some kind of reciprocity from the girl, some extra efforts to also show how deep her love for the guy has become before the story came to an end.
If you ask me if this Story of Kunning Palace is worth spending a lot of hours watching then the answer is definitely YES. It's not the best I have watched so far but the lessons you get glimpsed from this story are truly valuable. More than the unbreakable bond between a mother and a son, the series showed that a person will instill in his memories the kind of love he receives during his childhood and it would form part of his biases growing up. Plus I can relate to the mother-daughter dynamics of the female lead. I got reminded once again that truly, however much your mother seems to misunderstand and despise you, she still loves you deep inside her heart. That no mother would wish harm to her own offspring.
And sorry for the spoiler, this series has a happy ending and is perfect for those like me who believe that a story doesn't end unless it's finally a happy ending.
