MODERN

The lead stars of this romcom are real pros. Both male and female leads are personal favorites of mine so despite my obvious preference towards the supernatural and historical genres, I still took the time to watch this modern drama at Amazon Prime Video.

True enough, the stars did not disappoint. Yang Mi and Xu Kai portrayed their characters so well that it took me a while and with mental effort to remember them in other characters.

However, I have not taken a liking to the character of Xu Kai here. While both stars shine in their respective spaces, I think the character of Xu Kai is too passive for my taste. Well, of course maybe because I like a manly kind of character. The kind who looks difficult and formidable but totally caring and reliable towards his beloved.

The story is one that most of our generation can relate to. It's difficult enough to succeed as a woman in the corporate world, we also have to deal with expectations of becoming a homemaker, having kids and maintaining a respectable career. No wonder women sometimes resort to white lies just to be given equal opportunities with men in the workplace.

This series also deals with politics, establishing connections and morality issues. These are very common in any country but still they are things that are awkward to deal with but we have to be faced head on.

Then there are parents who unconsciously or not, tend to downright manipulate or forcefully influence the decisions of their children when it comes to marriage. It comes to a point when the children would have to make drastic moves just to appease them.

And the most complicated of all time, the reality of having feelings for someone who might not be ideal for us. There are so many standards we need to adhere to in this arena, in any culture. Finding the right person seems to be a game of chance and people coming back into our lives would only muddy the waters.

I am more than sure a lot of people and couples can relate to this drama. You can certainly learn a thing or two on managing relationships, the workplace and your life. Most importantly, you can be inspired watching this series, to focus on your goals and be persistent on your pursuits. No one can and will do it for you, except yourself with the people who truly care and love you.
