I absolutely love both the male and female leads of this series. I have this habit of leaving the best for last, especially for entertainment, thus, it took me a long time to binge watch this particular story. As I believe this series is at par with Eternal Love and Nirvana in Fire (1&2) then 56 episodes is not really long enough.

However, what I noticed right away is that Wu Lei looked so young as to play a General. I know he already portrayed such a role in The Long Ballad opposite Dilraba but in this particular series he really looked extremely young. I can't exactly pinpoint the particulars of my observation but it just feels like he looks so innocent to be playing someone who is jaded and so bent on revenge. He portrayed really well though the inner struggle one faces between wanting to have a life with a beloved and staying true to one's supposed purpose.

Zhao Lusi on the other hand, looked a bit older for her supposed age in this series. Well, I think it's just good acting on her part portraying a filial daughter, ever ready to defend family and loved ones in every circumstance.

Together though, they make a great couple. The "kilig" factor is delivered well enough that no episode seemed boring. I also agree that it's best for the man to fall hard first for he will be steadfast. A woman can and usually changes her mind depending on the efforts of the other.

This story is endearing in that the emperor is portrayed as truly benevolent and loving towards his family. He tries to be really fair and not just to his clan members but to his subjects as well. It is also very realistic that not all of his children are the same. They have different beliefs and personalities, different agendas and priorities. It's also nice to watch his empress and concubine get along well with each other.

The series is not only about royalties and wonderful families. It is also laden with lessons of the past and hopes for the future. It is about being filial and also about making the right choice especially when it comes to marriage. It is about achieving goals in the best way possible without hurting the innocent. It is rising up to the challenge of leadership when the need arises and being loyal and humble enough to know your proper place.

All in all, I would say this is worth the many hours you would spend feeling giddy and sometimes frustrated in this series. You might cry at times and laugh at most scenes. However, do be mindful of the many lessons incorporated in the story. You would definitely relate and would find them relevant even to this day.
