Xu Kai, as you might have assumed already, is the only reason why I watched this series. It was such a slow burn for me that it took me several weeks and multiple detours (watching other series) to finish Court Lady. In fairness though, the last two episodes made me shed precious tears. I finally appreciated this historical drama for several reasons.

One, although the plot is common for royal siblings to vie for their father's attention, the younger siblings of the crown prince were actually supportive of him. However, intrigues in the court and the manipulation of people with bad intentions eventually tore the brothers apart. Added to the complications are consorts to the princes who are either too ambitious or too naive for their own good.

Now comes the Court Lady Fu Roy and her love interest (and mine too, for a time at least, haha) Sheng Chumu who always save the day for the Emperor and the Empress. They are both talented and upright, eager not to please but to uphold justice based on the law. You will also come to realize in this series that a good intention when acted upon in the right time and at the right place will always bear great fruits.

The Court Lady is such a popular figure in this story that three significant men pursued her. One pirate leader turned hero, or male lead who is an outstanding personality in all ways that matter, and a handsome and intelligent royal prince. Not bad for a lady who came from the suburbs.

Our male lead's character of a renowned playboy that turned into a military strategist with heroic exploits is a testament of what love can do.

This series is also ripe with different and complicated family dynamics, the constant struggle of choosing between evil and the lesser evil and power play. However, this is also a story of true love and persistence, of sacrifice for the greater good, loyalty and friendship and the eventual triumph of good over evil.

The end can be considered overall a happy one but Prince Zhou has been a great character throughout this series. I believe he deserves a better ending than what he got.

Anyway, this historical drama is worth watching so make time when you can.
